About the presenters:

Professor Alex Carter is the director of the Edson Queiroz Foundation Mediation Program and the director of Clinical Programs at Columbia Law School. She has trained U.N. delegates, Brazilian judges, and Japanese ambassadors in facilitative mediation and has mediated thousands of disputes, from Equal Employment Opportunity cases to small claims in New York City Civil Court.

Professor Shawn Watts is the associate director of Columbia’s mediation program. As a law student, he won the Jane Marks Murphy Prize for clinical advocacy and developed a course in Native American Peacemaking, an indigenous form of conflict resolution. He now teaches his Native Peacemaking course at Columbia and Yale.

Event is FREE for all attendees not seeking CLE credit

-    6 credits for the full day (including 2.5 ethics credits)

-    3 credits for each session (including 1.25 ethics credits)

AGENDA

Introductions: 8am – 8:30am

(Coffee and light refreshments provided)

Morning session: 8:30am – 11:30am

-    Overview of facilitative mediation

-    Skills training: targeted focus on several skills, such as:

o reframing

o creating movement

o when to separate the parties

-    Small group exercises


Lunch panel: 12pm – 1pm

(Sponsored by the Young Lawyers Section of the Anchorage Bar Association)

Discussion topics:   1) The path to becoming a clinical law professor

2) Incorporating facilitative mediation into everyday life

3) How to be an advocate and a mediator

Afternoon session: 1:30pm – 4:30pm

-     Targeted focus on particular issues arising during mediations, as tailored to group requests. Some possible topics include:

o What to do when one party is represented by counsel

o Challenges in remaining impartial

o If and when cases are no longer appropriate for mediation

-    Small group exercises

-    Recap and next steps for improvement
